Life As We Knew It.

A compilation of endangered species in the world depicting the dystopian aftermath of human activities.

Rusa alfredi

The Visayan spotted deer (Rusa alfredi), also known as the Philippine spotted deer, is a nocturnal and endangered species of deer located primarily in the rainforests of the Visayan islands of Panay and Negros though it once roamed other islands such as Cebu, Guimaras, Leyte, Masbate, and Samar. [1]

The Visayan spotted deer is one of the rarest and most narrowly distributed mammals in the world, with only a few hundred wild animals thought to remain. [2]

The Rajshahi Pony

The Rajshahi Pony is of the South-East Asia Pony type.[1] They are commonly used for "pleasure" and "relaxation" in Cox's Bazar - the beach town of Bangladesh.

26 Rajshahi Ponies have died since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.[2] There are allegations that many owners do not provide any food for their horses and set them free to roam around the city to find their food. These horses become severely ill and die by eating rotten and toxic foods from the roadside dustbins. They also commonly get injured when they are hit by a vehicle while crossing the streets in search of food and shelter.[3]

ROAD ACCIDENT

Humans take up more space on Earth for our homes and cities. Humans pollute habitats. They illegally hunt and kill animals and bring exotic species into habitats. All of these activities take resources and habitats away from plants and animals.

Human activity constantly change and destroy the habitats that plants and animals need to survive. Because human populations are growing so fast animals and plants are disappearing 1000 times faster than they have in the past 65 million years. Scientists estimate that in the 21st century 100 species will become extinct every day. Road accident is just a very small fraction of this destruction. We see it around us everyday and perhaps grow a habit of overlooking it.

This series is to explore such unnoticed dead that is around my very ordinary life. The photographs are all taken from my morning walk from my office to the nearest coffee shop in Austin.
